How to Remove In-Ceiling Speakers

 

In order to have an elegant look and good feel of your home sound system, you can simply install in-ceiling speakers that also enable you to provide extra space within your living room or entertainment area. However, if you are having problems with your ceiling speakers like it has blown off and need to be replaced, this is where you will encounter some issues. If you do not have any knowledge about removing the ceiling speakers, it is advisable that you hire professional audio or video technician. They would be able to assist you in removing the ceiling speakers and the service sometimes may be expensive. If you think it is easy for you to do it on your own, it is better that you do it yourself and cut down on the service cost that you have to pay for professional technician.

To remove in-ceiling speakers, you need:

  • Ladder
  • Awl
  • Phillips-head screwdriver
  • Socket wrench
  • 1/4-inch or 1/2-inch socket
  • Flat-head screwdriver

How to Remove In-Ceiling Speakers

  • The first thing that you need to do is to look for your home’s circuit breaker panel.
    • Once you find it, you should disable the power connected to the room where your ceiling speakers are installed.
    • For those of you who are not very sure on the switch that connects to that particular room, you just shutdown all the power to your house.
  • Next, you need to take a ladder and place it beneath the location of your in-ceiling speaker that you want to be removed.
    • If the ceiling of your house is quite high, make sure you are assisted with a friend so that he will stand at the base of your ladder and hold the ladder for extra safety precaution.
  • Then, you have to use an awl and hook it to a hole in your ceiling speaker’s grill cover in either one of the four corners of your grill. Do not place the awl in a hole located near the center of the grill’s cover.
    • You must pull the awl firmly but in a gentle way until that section of the grill comes free off the speaker assembly.
    • Then, repeat the same step for each corner of the grill’s cover until it has been completely removed from your ceiling speaker.
  • After that, you need to find the screws or bolts that mount your speaker inside the ceiling.
    • Normally, the ceiling speakers use the large Philips-head type of screws or 1/4- to 1/2-inch bolts. As for removing bolts, you need to use a socket wrench if it is necessary.
  • In order to separate any retention clips securing the speaker assembly against the mounting system in the ceiling, you should use a flat-head screwdriver.
    • Once finished securing the clips, you need to carefully pull out the speaker off the ceiling slightly before you can start to unplug the audio cables from its back.
    • Then only you would be able to remove the speaker away from the ceiling completely.
  • Once you have mastered all of the above mentioned steps, you can repeat the same procedure for removing all of your installed speakers from your house ceiling.

    Always remember that whenever you want to remove in-ceiling speakers,

    • Make sure to double check the electrical switch connected to the in-ceiling speakers and also the circuit breaker panel connecting to your speaker’s room has been turned off. This is most important thing that you must do because you are dealing with electricity which may cause unwanted incident to yourself if it is not turned off completely.
