How to Look for Leaks in your Roof and Window

  • First thing that you need to do is to find the source of leaks on your roof.

  • The next step for you to do is to set up a suitable ladder in order to climb up the roof. Stand on the roof at least halfway between the eaves and the peak.
    • Then, turn on the water and direct your garden hose (that has a shutoff on its end) right at the shingles from the top moving to the lowest point of the roof. You need to wet your roof a few square feet gradually and do it towards the peak of the roof.
  • Then, you need to mark the roof by using chalk whenever your helper informed you of any leaking area.
    • You should always communicate through your cellular phone or use a walkie talkie in order to make your task easier enabling you to know immediately when there are any leaking areas. This is important before you proceed to check on other section of your roof.

 

For safety, always allow the shingles to dry thoroughly before you start to climb down from the roof. Wet shingles are very dangerous because it is slippery and can cause you to fall down if you are not careful.

  • As for locating leaks in your window, you can simply make use a stick or cone of incense.
    • Firstly, you have to light the stick or incense cone using a match.
    • After that, you need to blow out the flame that you created in order to produce an incense smoke.
  • Next, you have to hold the incense right in front of your window and make sure to watch the smoke movement.
    • The area to concentrate is where the frame and the window come together, where the different window sections meet and where the window frame meets the wall. You must hold the incense at all of the above mentioned areas in order to locate leaks for your window.
