If your door knob is broken or it is time for it to be replaced, do not worry because replacing a worn or broken doorknob is not a task that needs special skill or takes a lot of your time. Always be prepared and keep replacement hardware of your doorknob even if you do not have problems with it because you never know when you need it. Door handles are usually sold at your local hardware stores and it comes with standard sizes, thus it is not a problem for you to find an exact fit for regular sized doors. Below are some of the steps that you can do in order to properly remove a door handle.
What you need:
- Phillips screwdriver
- Screwdriver
- Power drill
Method:
- First of all, you have to remove the old door handle by removing its screws which attach it to the door. Usually the screws are located on the interior side of the door and if your door knob comes with screws on the cover plates, you have to loosen up the old knob first. Other way is to look for a small slot that has a metal piece on the side of the handle before using a clip or the doorknob\’s key in order for you to push in on the metal piece for making the doorknob loose.
- The next step is to remove the underlying plate where you have to pull off the doorknob so that you will be able to see the plate below. Then, look for a slot inside the plate along the seam where it butts against your door before using a flathead screwdriver in the slot giving the plate half twist in order to pop it off.
- After that, remove the old screws and latch of the door knob. Once the plate has been removed, you can now remove all the screws by using a power drill, plus also remove the screws off the old latch either by using a power drill or a screwdriver.
- If the plate and latch of your old door handle are still in good conditions, you do not have to proceed with Step 3 mentioned above. You only need to install the new door handle that you have purchased and finish the task.
