The small office provides you with a private work area that you can do your work, personal task, study as well as doing household tasks like pay bills or preparing your budget for your expenses without being disturbed by your family members. Apart from that, it also adds a professional look to you whenever your customers visit you at your office. A common area where you can build your small office is the garage due to the area having a split access entry without the need to use your house main entrance. The most important thing that you must take note is the ability to maximize the area and turn it into a comfortable small office area.

  • First thing that you need to do is to draw a layout plan of your small office that you want to build in the garage area
    • When you decide to use only half of the garage area, you need to mark the location of the walls where you want to separate between the garage and your small office
    • Decide on how you want to create your office setup
  • Apart from that, you also need to determine the following tasks
    • Task that you want to do on your own.
    • Task that you are willing to hire a contractor to do it for you such as plumbing work, electrical, heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) work.
    • Other tasks like laying a new floor or building an interior wall can be done by you with the help of someone who have intermediate knowledge of do-it-yourself expertise.
  • Even if you are building only a small office, you still need to have a budget for the task
    • For example, you need money to buy certain items that you want to use or even if you want to hire professional interior personnel.
  • The next step is to clean out your garage so that you would be able to have extra room to work
    • If you feel that some of the items in the garage that you do not need, you can simply donate or sell them to interested buyers.
  • If you notice that your garage floor need to be repaired then you must repair it
    • For small cracks, you can just patch it on your own by simply digging into the floor just beneath the cracked area before you start to fill them using patching compound
    • As for large cracks which are more than an inch, you need to seek help from professional people for inspection and also repair them immediately. Large cracks can cause bigger problems to the foundation of your garage area.
  • Next, you need to remove your garage door.
    • You can either remove the garage door completely along with its hardware and start building a wall in place of your garage door
    • Another option is to only remove the garage door hardware or tracks and build an interior wall in place of the garage door in order to hide the door.

Always make an effort to check with your local council regarding the building codes that you must adhere to whenever you are doing any renovation to your garage.

  • After that, you can finish doing the exterior walls of your garage and also build a new walls for your small office
    • Before you build the walls, you need to create constructing frames and then connecting them to the sill plates on the floor.
    • Then, you have to insulate all your unfinished walls before you can cover them using drywall.
  • Once your wall has dried thoroughly, you can paint the ceiling and walls by using two coats of primer
    • Then, allow each of the primer coats to dry thoroughly before you continue painting them with your preferred color.
  • Finally, you can install new flooring to your small office
    • For example, you can use tile or hardwood floor because they are easy to maintain and also easy to clean.

    Always remember that before you start to do any changes to your garage

    • You need to seek advice from your local town council where there is a need to apply for any permits in order to create small office in the garage
    • Make sure to also check with an accountant where the construction costs can be write off when you start to make your home office and place it under business expense.
