Build a Patio With Pavers
In order to build a patio with pavers, you can simply design it with straight or irregular edges along with the usage of interlocking concrete pavers without rectilinear shapes. Some of the preformed pavers can fit together in several different orientations thus changing a bare dirt area into an attractive and practical backyard patio with coordinated paver edging.
What you need:
- Pavers
- Pavers Sand
- Square Shovel
- Steel Tine Rake
- 4 Wood stakes
- Mason\’s cord
- 25 foot measuring tape
- Rubber Mallet
- 2-by-4-inch boards–one 6 feet long and one 1 foot long
- 4-by-4 square post or tamper
- Level
- Broom or brush
- Workmen\’s gloves
Method:
- Firstly, you must determine the area of your patio, its sizes and also the shape of the patio. For a patio that sits next to your house, you must ensure that it is declined slightly away from the house at least 1-inch for every 8 feet for drainage purposes.
- Measure your patio size using a measuring tape and also you need to use wood stakes and Mason\’s cord to outline the shape and size of your patio. It is much easier to create square or rectangular patios because you can easily determine how many pavers to use for the patio. For example, if you have a patio size of 15 by 15 feet or 225 square feet, you need at least 225 12 by 12-inch pavers. Always purchase more pavers in case some of it gets broken and a replacement is needed.
- To remove sod or higher areas on the chosen patio area, you can use a square shovel. Make sure you dig at least four inches depth in order to place the sand and the paver.
- Lay a 2-by-4 on the ground horizontally and then vertically with the level on top in order to determine if the ground is level or if you have enough decline for drainage away from your house or structure.
- Spread the paver\’s sand over your patio ground with at least 2-inches of sand before you start to tamper the sand making it more compact or you can use the 4-by-4 post.
- Next, place the first paver against your house and you can use the level to ensure it is level and within the right height. Then, you can lay the second paver next to it and use the rubber mallet so that you can position the paver accordingly. You should continue laying pavers next to each of them and you can use the paver next to it as your guideline.
- Once finished, pour sand over your pavers and then, use a broom to sweep the sand between its spaces in order to compact them. Overtime, the rain tends to wash away the sand and you must ensure to add some sand to the spaces.
