Installing door-flashing materials around certain areas in your house such as around the sill, header and the doorjambs will create a protective watertight seal. This is important because it can protect your walls from becoming rotten, infected by pests, mold and other reasons caused by the weather. Apart from that, it can also help you in reducing your utility bills because you would not be having an exchange of air flowing through your doors and it also becomes your drainage plane in draining the rain water away from your house. By using this proper water management, you can maintain the lifetime of your doors and frame, provide a watertight and resistant from the damage caused by the weather. Installing door flashing is an easy process and below are some of the steps that you can do in order to install door flashing in just a few hours.
What you need:
- Peel and Stick flashing
- Sharp Scissors
- Spray Bottle with cleaning material
- Dry Cloth
- Tape Measure
- Masking Tape
Method:
- First of all, before you install a door flashing, you have to remove your old flashing (if you have an existing one) at the existing place that you wanted to do the installation.
- After that, you will have to cut the house wrap where you can start at the header with a 45-degree angle in order for you to create a flap. Then, use a masking tape for temporarily placing the flap out of the way.
- The next step is to use a cleaning solution for cleaning around the area where you want the flashing to be installed. The purpose of doing this is to enable the sticky side of your flashing to adhere even better on the area and also make sure the area is thoroughly dry before you attach the flashing on it. Then, you need to overlap the flashing onto the doorjambs and you can use a self stick flash on it. The flashing need to overlap the edges of the sill at least 1-inch and also extends past its head at least by 2-inch. If there is any rough opening on the door, always follow the directions provided by the manufacturer.
- Then, a 2-inch drip edge need to be installed on each side of the door. You have to slip the drip under the house wrap that you have made earlier that was mentioned in Step 2. The reason for creating this edge is to prevent any excess water from damaging the door heading.
- At the door heading, you can now install the peel and stick flashing. The flashing needs to overlap both the drip edge and the house wrap and at least 1-inch of the flashing should be extended in this area for it to go beyond the jambs.
- Finally, you will have to wrap flap it back over by taping it down in order for the material not to overlap the flashing of your door heading.
