Method for Detecting Bromine in Pool

 

For those of you who own a swimming pool, you must always do regular chemical maintenance to pool in order for the water level in the pool remains healthy, clean and safe for usage. One of the methods is to test your pool so that you would be able to detect the presence of bromine in your pool. Bromine is known as a sanitizing chemical that eliminates bacteria as well as other nasty particles that is visible or not to your eyes that floats in your swimming pool. In other word, bromine is an alternative for chlorine-based sanitizers and you will find that it comes in the form of either liquid or granule. You would be able to test the presence of bromine in your pool water simply by doing testing of the water with a bromine test strip or use a testing kit. The test strip will tell you if it detected any amount of bromine inside your pool where it will reacts to bromine by changing color. The type of color enables you to check against the chart provided by the manufacturer of the test strip product. However, whether you are using a bromine test strip or even a testing kit, the most important thing is to always follow the directions provided by its manufacturer before applying it into your swimming pool. Whenever you find out that the level of bromine is too low inside your swimming pool, you need to add some bromine to the pool water. Below is a few tips and guidance that you can take note for detecting bromine in your pool.

  • Bromine test strip

  • First thing that you need to do is to collect sample of your pool’s water in fill it into a small container or bottle.
    • Make sure that you hold the small container or bottle at least one foot beneath the surface of the pool’s water in order to fill the small container or bottle in order to gather a good sample. This technique helps you to obtain a much accurate measures than using surface water.
    • Apart from testing bromine, you can also use test strips for testing the level of chlorine, alkaline, as well as pH.
    • It is recommended that you do the testing of chemical levels at least 2 or 3 times in a week. This is to ensure the safety of swimmers who uses your swimming pool regularly.
  • The next thing that you need to do is to lower a bromine test strip into the sample water that you have filled into the small container or bottle.
    • Always follow the instruction provided by the product’s manufacturer.
    • Then, hold the strip in the water for a few seconds.
    • After that, you can bring out the strip from the water.

Always remember not to shake any of the excess water off your test strip. The test strip that you used should be dipped inside your pool water in order to get better results.

  • Then, you need to compare the color of the test strip that has changed.
    • Always wait for at least 10 seconds so that you would be able to see the strip changing color.
    • The color need to compare against the colors on your standard chart provided by the manufacturer on the test strip bottle or any other instructions.
    • Make sure to record all the results and findings into a note book for reference.

No matter what type of testing chemicals that you used, the chemicals must be kept in a cool, dry and shaded area. The area must also be out of reach from your children as well as pets.

Always remember that whenever you want to detect bromine in your swimming pool,

  • Whenever you are doing adjustment on the level of chemical for your swimming pool, you should do it in an alphabetical order. For example, start doing the adjustment starting with alkalinity, followed by bromine or chlorine before continuing testing of the pH level.
  • We recommended that you do the testing of the bromine level in your pool at least once a week. This is to maintain a healthy level of pool water.
  • By having an ideal level of bromine between the range of 2.5 and 4.0 parts per million, it is more than enough to help you in performing a routine upkeep of the water in your swimming pool and also eliminating any new intruders that want to enter your pool.
