  • For those of you who want to finish repairing wooden siding, there are several diverse styles that you can use whether it involves clapboard cedar siding or shakes.
    • With proper maintenance of your wood siding, you would be able to ensure that exterior siding can last for a long time.
    • With exposure to weather elements such as the sun, wind, rain, snow, ice and other nature elements, your exterior wooden siding need to be maintain regularly so that it will not fall apart.
  • You must make sure that your wooden siding is sealed to protect it against water damage.
    • The most common wood sealer that you can use is by painting the wood because it will form a hard protective coating over the wood and moisture would not be able to penetrate into the wood.
    • It also prevents the wood from cracking and peel due to any weather condition.
  • Before you start to paint your exterior siding, you must ensure that all loose paint has been scraped completely.
    • If you paint your new paint on top of loose paint, the new paint will definitely not stick onto the wood.
    • Old or loose paint can be removed by using a scraper or even with a wire brush.
    • You need to use a high quality primer on all of the bare spots before you start to painting task. A good primer will soak into the wood in a slightly manner thus providing a good base for your new paint to stick onto the wood. Leave the primer to dry completely before you start to apply your new paint.

Do not use cheap paints with low quality content. You will notice that good quality paint will come out of the can just like a pudding.

  • For badly damaged siding, you need to replace it immediately once you have purchased a new replacement siding.
    • Gently place your pry bar beneath the damaged siding and try to work it slowly back and forth.
    • By doing this method, you would be able to loosen up the nails that hold the siding in place. Do not do it in a faster way because you might damage the other good pieces around it.
    • Once the damaged piece has been removed, you can use it as template for cutting your new piece of siding following the exact size of your damaged wood.
  • For attaching the new piece of siding, you should use #8 or #10 concrete coated nails.
    • We do not recommend you to use galvanized nails because it can bleed through the paint and in the end resulted to discoloration.
    • After the siding piece has been laid in place, you can use paintable silicone or acrylic caulk to seal around all of your siding’s edges.
    • Once you have confirmed that the caulk has cured completely, you can proceed to prime and paint the wood siding accordingly.
  • Make sure that you purchase extra sidings because you may not be able to find the siding that matches your house in future if you want to repair any damaged sidings in future.
  • You can also find brick veneer walls which is a masonry siding used in some homes.
    • The bricks are normally bonded onto each other with mortar where it plays an important role in the siding’s structure and also the structural integrity of the wall. It also keeps water from penetrating into the wall that can cause the wall to crack or popping.
  • Damaged brick siding need to repair by replacing the broken brick with a new one.
    • The task can be attempted on your own if you are trying to repair 1 brick or even up to 4 adjoining bricks. You must also ensure that the wall is not load bearing.

    Always remember that whenever you want to finish repairing the siding at your house especially when it comes to use paint on the siding. Sometimes you will need to paint the whole wall so that you can hide the new siding.

    • New wood will not be able to take in the paint exactly like the old siding. That is why it is recommended that you camouflage the new siding by painting the whole area of your wall with fresh coating.
